Recovery Tip 27: Unreasonable Expectations

Today’s tip on how to help an addicted loved one, recover comes from my book “Unhooked”, and that is that unreasonable expectations placed on other people are premeditated resentments. If you think about it, a lot of times when we’re trying to help an addicted loved one recover, we have this expectation that they should change quickly. Like they should, as soon as we discover they have an addiction that they should immediately change and get sober just because we found out. Or we get them into treatment and we expect them to be cured after 30 days of residential treatment, and it’s just not realistic. So just keep in mind that when we set unreasonable expectations on others, we are setting ourselves up for future resentments.
